Abstract


The work of Mr. Norman Gill, who had established horticulture in the Kumaon hills and had introduced and cultivated Atropa belladonna and other medicinal crops from 1909-1921 are discussed. The tropane alkaloids yielding plants like Physoclaina praealta found in the north-western and western Himalayas in India is discussed along with Duboisia myoporoides, species introduced from Australiia and its failure in India. The plants which yield furanocoumarins and bergapten for the pharmaceutical industry like; Ammi majus & Ammi visnaga, the introduced plants and Heracleum candicans, growing in the Himalayas are dealt with their botany, history and uses along with chemical constituents are discussed. The plants like; Heracleum sosnowskyi once introduced in the country from Russia is briefly discussed.
