AbstractThe present medicinal use of licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra throughout the world dates back to Egyptian culture.
Its possible introduction in India. It was used primarily as a demulcent, expectorant, antitussive, and mild
laxative. Its furher traditional use includes, the treatment of peptic ulcers, asthma, pharyngitis, malaria,
abdominal pain, insomnia and infections. This paper deals with the history of the plant, its distribution, the main
production centres, its main uses in medicine ,etc. its substitute and adulterant. Its chemical constituents its
pharmacology and clinical uses along with other uses.
