Abstract

Antimicrobial activity of cows urine were evaluated against two bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli,) and two fungal strain (Aspergillus, Rhizophus ). The cows urine were used in folk medicine in the treatment of skin diseases, flu allergic cold, rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial/viral infections, tuberculosis, chicken pox, hepatitis, asthma, ageing, chemical intoxications etc., The results indicated that cows urine exhibited antimicrobial activity against one or more of the tested microorganisms at three different concentrations of 5%,10%,15% per /disc. Among these cows urine at 15% concentration was most active and the percentage of inhibition 85%. The highest antifungal activity was exhibited by E.coli .This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the Go-mutra in folkloric medicine. This study also showed cows urine could be the potential sources of new antimicrobial agents. The nutritional effect of cow's urine on plant growth was also tested with cowpea plants and the chlorophyll and protein content was also estimated.
